Live Oaks

The Live oak is the southern symbol of strength.  Its spreading branches line many historic streets from Virginia to Florida. The wood is hard, heavy, tough and strong and has long been used for structural beams requiring great strength, especially in early shipbuilding.

For this reason, when the senior citizens of Oak Chapel convened in July, 2004, we chose the name “The Live Oaks”.  We like to think that we portray many of the characteristics of a live oak in our work in and for the church.

We meet in Boyer Hall on the second Monday of each month at noon for regular meetings.  Each gathering begins with a brief business meeting followed by prayer and lunch.  A program of interest (such as a speaker or performance) follows lunch.  We also take field trips a few times each year. For example, we had an outstanding trip to Strawbridge Shrine near New Windsor, MD, where we were treated to a lecture/discussion on the beginnings of Methodism in America and received communion in a replica of the Log Meeting House which was originally built in 1764.  We have also toured the White House with its beautiful Christmas decorations.

The latest information about Live Oak activities can be found on the bulletin board in the hallway just outside the kitchen door of Boyer Hall.

Ongoing Projects

We have three ongoing projects. Every third Thursday we play Bingo with patients at Randolph Hills Nursing Home. We always need small suitable items for prizes. You can give them to Kay Colvin, Mark Colvin or Nancy Myers.

Gene Beall leads the collection of blankets and small toys for the Germantown Police Dept. Victims Assistance Unit. Contact Gene if you have donations for this project.

Live Oaks is responsible for stocking the shelves of the Food Pantry and staffing the Food Pantry when it is open on the second Wednesday of each month. If you have questions about this please contact Gene Beall or Dusti Connor.
