Welcome to the MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship) section of our website! MYF is a group for middle and high school students to have fun while learning about the Lord. Our group goals are to build community, deepen our relationship with Christ, and serve God by serving others. We call ourselves “The Jesus Disease” because we want our joy in Christ to be so contagious that it’s like we have an infectious disease for His kingdom. We meet as a group every Sunday morning for Sunday school (9:30am) and every Sunday night for "Youth Group Night" (6:30pm-8:30pm). Several times throughout the year, we do special activities (such as bowling, rock climbing, Brookside Gardens, retreats, and so on...) and service projects. We feel that, as Christians, we are called to serve inside the church, and also serve our community outside of the church. So, for a service day, we might clean up a room in the church, write Valentines to the congregation, visit people with disabilities, or pack Thanksgiving dinners for those who need them. Check out the youth calendar to see what we're up to right now. That being said, we hope that you'll join us on a Sunday morning and see what we're all about!

Starting this Fall, Oak Chapel will have separate high school (9th-12th grade) and middle school (6th-8th grade) Sunday school classes. This is the first time we’ve been able to do this! For the first half-hour of Sunday school, we will meet as a whole group for some worship songs and announcements. Then, for about 40 minutes, the middle school will break off for their own Sunday school time. Finally, we will come back together for the last few minutes to pray together. Brooke and Bob will continue to teach the high school class and lead youth activities (which will include 6th-12th grade). We just need someone to teach the middle school Sunday school class! This class will consist of about six students, and a curriculum will be provided for you (unless you’d like to create your own). Please pray on this and contact Brooke with any questions or to indicate your interest.

Every Sunday night, we have a Youth Group Night from 5:30pm-8:30pm in the youth room. These nights are very casual and youth are encouraged to invite friends. Youth can arrive when they’re able and leave when they need to, but we’d prefer that everyone be there by 6:00 so that we can eat dinner together. Youth should bring $5 for dinner.

The youth group ended the school year with some great activities. On the 31st of May, we just hung out at church and then headed over to Queensguard to play some kickball. We also prayed for the new recreation center while we were there. Then, on the 7th of June, we went to the Inwood House (an apartment complex for people with disabilities) and played board games with the residents there. We had such a great time! We hope to get back over there again soon. Also, on the 14th, the Sunday school students helped out with the second service and we honored Kelly Washington who will be leaving us to go off to WestPoint for college. This summer, we will still have regular middle and high school Sunday school, but we will be taking a break from other extra activities. However, August 30th, we will start back up and begin having a youth group night every Sunday night from 5:30-8:30. We are just going to hang out together and talk about our devotions from that week. And, in order to make these nights more fun, we’re going to be cleaning up our room and we’re looking for a few things to add. If anyone has any of these items that they’d like to donate to the youth group, please let me know! We could use a: - Air hockey, Ping pong, or Foosball table
- Basketball Hoop (to be set up at the end of the parking lot in front of the church office)
- King-sized sheets (to use as couch covers)
- Any other sports equipment or games
Thanks so much for all of your prayers and support! ~Brooke Morgereth

Looking Back: The youth had two really big events in March. On Saturday, March 7th, the youth group hosted another Dinner Theatre fundraiser. We had set up enough tables and chairs for almost 80 people, but as people began arriving, we had to set up even more tables because we were running out of room! Thank you so much to all of you for your support and help! Thank you especially to those of you who provided food and entertained us with an act! We really had such a great time and raised enough money to cut the cost of the retreats in half!
And, on that note, Kathryn Schneider, Seray Bayoh, and I just got back from the high school retreat. The three of us drove up to the North Bay retreat center (right on the Chesapeake!) Friday afternoon and had the most amazing weekend. We spent the weekend hanging out with about 250 other high schoolers from Grace Community Church learning about forgiveness and apologizing. It was truly life changing.

On Saturday March 7th the Jesus Disease, the Oak Chapel Youth Group, organized and took part as performers in a youth led talent show. This was an amazing event with talent displayed by many people and many groups! Some of these displays of brilliance are shown here. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank those youth who participated in this event and who were not simply willing to do this talent show, but who were wanting to do this talent show! Also, thank you parents who were supportive in this venture! Take a look at some of Oak Chapel's amazing talent- |

On Saturday, October 11th, 2008, Oak Chapel participated in a Help the Homeless mini-walk to support Silver Spring Interfaith Housing Coalition. This event raised money for SSIHC to help them provide programmatic support to real families and plant the seeds of hope for the future that a better world is possible for all people. The National Coalition for the Homeless sent a speaker, Steve, who told us his story and what it had been like for him to be homeless for a time. We learned a lot and his story was truly inspiring. We then went on a short walk carrying signs to show our support.
The youth actually led and organized this event. They had collected toiletries and snacks from the congregation which they assembled into “goodie bags” for the homeless so that walkers could a grab a couple on their way out to hand to people they see on the streets. The youth also led the walk and set up stations along the route where groups stopped and were able to learn more about homelessness and what they can do about it. |
