Reverend William R. Boyer
Bill came to Oak Chapel in July of 1994 and has oversaw a period
of significant growth – growth in membership, attendance, ministries
and physical facilities. Bill grew up attending Chevy Chase Methodist
Church. He graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1957,
from the University of Maryland (B.A.) in 1961, and from Drew University
School of Theology (M. Div.) in 1964. He was appointed to the Prospect
– Marvin United Methodist Charge, Mt. Airy, Maryland, from 1964
to 1968, and then to Sandy Mount United Methodist Church, outside
Westminster, Maryland, from 1968 to 1978.
In 1978 Bill requested a leave of absence from the ministry and,
for the next sixteen years, worked in commercial insurance brokerage,
mostly with Alexander & Alexander in Baltimore and Washington.
During his absence from the ministry, and in addition to his employment,
he and Mary remained active members of their church and community.
He served as President of the Baltimore County Chamber of Commerce
in 1985 and as Chairman of the Board of Washington Goodwill Industries
in 1993 and 1994. He returned to active ministry in 1994 and was appointed
to Oak Chapel.
Bill and Mary now reside in Westminster, Maryland. They have two
daughters and five grandchildren. In addition to his duties as a minister,
Bill enjoys gardening, playing the guitar, singing with our people
and with the children of Oak Chapel Academy, teaching Bible studies,
playing with his five grandchildren, and traveling with Mary. He is
most proud of Oak Chapel’s diversity and its improving programs
and facilities for the benefit of all age groups. (In the past ten
years, our School has grown from a Day Care Center to a full-fledged
Elementary and Middle School.)
In mid-2003, the demands of a growing church and growing family
obligations led Bill to request a reduced work schedule. The church
granted this and employed Bob Schneider as Associate Pastor. When
Bill retired in 2005 Bob agreed to become our full time pastor.
